Lego Crazy...

We are all Lego fans in this house, which is juts as well really! Ebi-kun has worked his way through the Kingdom's (knights) sets and now is hooked on Ninjago, we have a good collection of goodies and baddies so the ninjas have teamed up with the knights and some big battles have been going on. The downside of this is that I have apparently been appointed as Chief Lego Builder so when something is damaged in battle I have to rebuild it, I can see the novelty of this wearing off pretty quickly.

Anyway, a question for fellow Lego fans, how do you store it all? At the moment we have a couple of tackle boxes for all the teeny pieces and a big box for the main pieces and I also made a grab mat but it isn't working well so I am open to suggestions, if you have a Lego storage system that works really well, please share! Do you keep each set in it's own box or just chuck it all in together?

  1. We have a shoebox size clear plastic box for each main color and the a divided box for all the little pieces. It is not perfect by any means but we are getting closer to organized and functional. I have a 6yr and 4yr old boys, a husband and myself who will all build together.

  2. I broke down and bought some of these giant lego containers. Container Store Lego But it's too pricey to buy enough to actually hold all the pieces. I have seen similar cabinet sets with containers instead of drawers at craft stores for scrapbooking though (usually some place that has a 40% off coupon!). That said, I don't know if you'd find something like this in Japan.

  3. IKEA Trofast for us! We sort LEGOs by color.
Here is a nice blog post about it:

My stickers aren't so pretty, though. Oh, well.
She has a link to Trofast on IKEA there.

  4. I like doing this for the larger items. I am not a big store them as a set fan but I find a lot of people do. I have seen them put the pieces in bags with the instructions. I personally am trying to find a good way for all the unusual pieces.

  6. Our many, many sets are now all in a couple of big boxes, however I was super-impressed by a friend's storage system back home - he had seperate boxes for each colour, wheels, special parts, etc. I noticed that the Lego 'Terebi Champions' also used this system, so perhaps more for the fanatics? ;-)

  7. some great ideas so far. It took me longer to find the parts than it did to build the various bits so I am all for sorting into colour or shapes, I was also think Ikea might have to come into play at some stage :o)

  8. We have the block sorter which sorts into 4 different sizes. Then we use a 6 drawer Iris (or similar type) cart and have each size from the sorter in a drawer with 2 drawers for red (the most common size) and the top drawer is for minifigs and large base pieces.

  9. We chuck it all in together but I dismember the instructions and put them in one of those folders with plastic sleeves , for easy flicking.

  10. Our low cost version is to have zip lock backs for each colour then one for people, one for itty bitty fixtures, etc. It's fairly successful as you can kind of see what's in the bag but it always ends up tipped onto the floor in the piece isn't forthcoming. Sadly any alternative I've seen has ended up too expensive if it's to have enough big and small compartments to house our expanding variety of lego. I'm interested in everyone else's ideas too!

  11. We used to have just a big 'grab mat' (?) piece of material with velcro on all sides. We all played a lot with lego growing up and I always found half the fun was going through everything looking for pieces. Not half as much fun if you have everything in exact locations - in my novice lego opinion at least. We have a growing collection now and I am just waiting on old school stuff I sent from home from 30 years ago. Now I just need to buy a whole lot of velcro!!

  13. We are a chuck it all in together family - it's actually in two huge boxes as we have so much! The girls then tip it all out in a huge pile and that becomes the 'tip' and they make cars and trucks and go and salvage in the tip to make houses etc. Great fun and so far they haven't complained about picking it all up!

  14. Josh says when they are sorted by color he can not find the piece he wants. Right now we have them sorted into plastic drawers by Brick, Flat, People/Accessories, and Odd Pieces. He has a crazy amount of Lego which include my husband and my old sets. This is not working perfectly not sure what to do to improve it. We have tried several different ways, so looking forward to reading all the responses!

  15. Our system is very similar to the one linked above by Renee. I picked up a set of plastic drawers like that at Off House for only Y500, but it has 7 drawers, and is a little skinnier. I also got the mini desktop organizer version for only Y250, which has 3 drawers, one for people, one for "accessories" like guns and hats and one for the special pieces like wheels and teeny-tiny headlights.

  16. We have some of the IKEA large white bins, the SORTERA recycling bins. They come in a smaller size and a bigger size. They can be stacked, but you can still access what is inside them. Then, for sets, like a car or shuttle, we keep the parts in a gallon Ziplock bag and toss it in the bin. Be careful stacking more than two. While they are light, it's not pleasant when a kid pulls them over on themselves.

We also use these for marble run parts and kinex.

  18. Nice post. I study one thing more challenging on different blogs everyday. It would at all times be stimulating to read content material from other writers and follow a bit something from their store. I'd want to make use of some with the content on my weblog whether or not you don't mind. Natually I'll provide you with a link in your internet blog. Thanks for sharing.
