*for those who are as clueless as me, Black Friday is a big sale day for bricks and mortar stores, the day after thanksgiving. Cyber Monday is a newer sale day for internet based shops.

Black Friday ~ Cyber Monday SALE
I had no idea what Black Friday* was until I opened an Etsy shop and the first year it totally passed me by, but this year I am a bit more organised, thanks to some new apps that you can use with Etsy. Before now, to have a sale generally meant manually changing every listing in your store - and if you have over 100 listings then that is quite a lot of work! So, this year I am trying out the new sale app, there will be a 10% discount on all fabric from Friday through to Monday. I need 5 more sales to hit the big 500 so the first 5 customers will also get a free gift and their name in the hat for the 500 giveaway prize.

in the US, the christmas season pretty much starts the day after thanksgiving (up until thanksgiving it's still "fall" in my mind, and many other americans, i think). shops change their storefront displays to christmas/winter scenes and of course everyone gets serious about getting everything on their christmas shopping lists. stores help by holding lots of sales and only encourage more people to go out on friday and spend more money. the day marks the day when a lot of shops stop being "in the red" and start making a profit (being "in the black") for the fiscal year. that's why i always thought it was called black friday. though wikipedia says "The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving...Later an alternative explanation began to be offered: that "Black Friday" indicates the period during which retailers are turning a profit, or "in the black." a little history lesson for me, too!
